Review of Simon Birch (1998) by Aaron R — 07 Mar 2008
Ok so this is hamfisted, manipulative Disney fodder but I just got melted by it. The sentimentality is almost choking, the saccharine will drown you, the james newtown howard score overbearing, the Jim Carrey narration overblown but I sailed away with it.
The irreverent central performance by Ian Michael Smith is so endearing that as the heartstrings get tugged I just bawled my goddamn eyes out. It's a keeper.. Guilty as charged.
