Review of Silverado (1985) by Adrian S — 24 Dec 2007
Silverado is the best western I have ever seen ("High Noon" would come in second). It has one of the best ensemble casts ever put together, in my opinion, and they bring their characters to life. What I like most about the movie is that I actually came to care about the main characters. They are, for the most part, honorable men who only kill in self-defense or to protect other people. They love their families and risk their own lives to protect them. Those are character qualities worth admiring.
That being said, there are a few negative elements that remove just a bit of the sheen from Silverado. Kevin Kline's character loves to drink. He loves the smell of a saloon, and even works in one for while. He is seen several times drinking "the good stuff" - i.e., hard liquor. Nevertheless, he does genuinely care for other people.
A handful of curse words also creep in, including several misuses of God's name. When you add these negative elements with a decent amount of violence (not graphic) and some adult themes, the film does earn its PG-13 rating.
I will say, though, that drinking is the only negative element that is pervasive. Otherwise, this film is an enjoyable visit the Wild West.
