Review of Silver Linings Playbook (2012) by Brandon W — 11 May 2015
David O. Russell's Silver Linings Playbook is a masterpiece that is destined to be a modern classic. I've never met a person that have these type of disorders, but the way it's portraying, does make it seem like something that people with disorders would actually act that way, which makes it very realistic to say at least.
The writing is really great that it feels like it brought the characters to life. Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Robert De Niro, and Jacki Weaver are terrific in this, and Chris Tucker has a really good calm performance that is not like his usual shtick in his other films.
There's a lot of funny moments, and the film doesn't make fun of the disorders, although there were some scenes that the characters were making fun of the fact that he got out of the "loony bin", but there's not many of it and it only lasted very shortly.
The characters are very memorable, especially Patrick and Tiffany that their chemistry is really something that I've never seen before, and they also go through Dirty Dancing territory, but still makes it its own thing.
The dancing is not the best I have seen, but it wasn't suppose to be and you aren't excited to see them get the highest score, you're invested to see them get the score that they deserve to get which fascinates me about this which rarely happens in a film.
Silver Linings Playbook is a risky movie to make as it could've been very offensive for the way it's portraying, but David O. Russell's direction and writing doesn't go too far with it at all which is completely great and it doesn't play it safe, making it a wonderful and relatable experience for me, that is if I've met someone with that disorder, and perhaps everyone who seen this.
