Review of Silent Night, Deadly Night Part 2 (1987) by Allan C — 30 Aug 2015
Now follow me with this, I'm going to try to be as brief as I can, but the reason I'm giving this movie such an average, but higher than average rating, is because I am going to give the filmmakers the benefit of the doubt that they are more clever then a lot of people consider them.
Silent Night, Deadly Night 2 to be understood completely you need to watch the first movie, understand the fallout from what happened when the movie was released and surrounding it; this is one of the movies that is responsible for the slasher movie genre declining in the 1980s, and then watch this one with an understanding that they just wanted a retouch of the first movie.
Which is why the first 40 minutes of this nearly 100 minute movie is the cliff notes of the first movie and the last 60 minutes is devoted to the main character of the original Billy's brother Ricky and his over the top, scenery chewing, overly emotional facial features and acting.
Understanding the fall out of him growing up with knowing what happened to his parents and his brother. This movie, at least the second half, is the film makers severely tongue-in-cheek approach to how the first film was treated and just going all out with the sequel.
There are a couple scenes in this movie that are internet sensations and if you quote, "Garbage Day!" with over emoting eyebrows to anyone who has seen this movie or knows about that scene in particular you will get a chuckle every time.
I laughed so hard at several scenes and was blown away by some of the scenes, and how clever they were or its just me over analyzing. I recommend this to anyone who is a fan of slasher movies, like to watch so bad they're good movies, or just curious with pop culture and how society has dealt with slasher films and how filmmakers can approach that and deal with that in their own special and creative way.
