Review of Silent Night, Deadly Night (1984) by Dougal S — 21 Feb 2010
How does a standard American, low budget slasher flick get to become one of the most controversial films of the age? Simple - dress the killer up as Santa Claus!
This is a film that was banned and vilified around the world and had middle America picketing cinemas - but does it really deserve it?
Leaving aside the film's central premise it's a standard mid-range 80s slasher with some good set pieces and brutal killings all wrapped up in typical MTV bright-lit camera work. But then throw in the Christmas theme and you've got a bit of a cult classic. Seen now it's pretty dated and often the intended tension falls a bit flat but who cares when something so simple can upset so many people!!
A guilty pleasure that I may wheel out again for a Christmas Eve viewing this year- just to get into the spirit!
