Review of Silent Hill (2006) by Iraklis P — 18 May 2016
From an atmospherical and visual representation of the games, this movie blows it out of the park, from the ashen fog,the nurses, the babies and the legendary Pyramid Head,it shows the best of the Silent Hills demons and does them credit. As someone who has understood the games quiet well, this movie's plot twist will be quiet easy to detect, but it still takes some liberties from the game this movie adapts. The plot kept me wondering who will live, who will die,why this version of Silent Hill exists as every Silent Hill exists for a reason.
While the theme and logic is taken from the games,it still manages to warp around the ideas without straight out copying them. It does however have some flaws. (The various demons being symbolism for rape and other acts that don't fit the protagonist still being present. Cybil deciding to stay behind because the writers didn't know how to kill her. Rose deciding not to climb the easily climbable rumble, and rather risking her own life. The bugs not managing to kill Rose and Cybil despite them not having a weapon and somehow surviving the night.) However ignoring those minor holes in the plot, and understanding that the movie will play by its own rules and not the rules of the games. The lore of Alessa and ESPECIALLY the satisfying ending will win your heart, especially if you haven't played the games and realize the logic behind Silent Hill at the very end. I think this movie gets too much flack because not many people understand the plot, some of the blame goes for the writers for adding a nonsensical cliffhanger on a movie that didn't need a sequel and (by the quality of the second movie) shouldn't have the sequel.
I don't think however, that the plot is hard to understand, the characters' motivation is bad,or that the cilffhanger takes enough out of it to make this a bad movie,as far as I know the only REALLY bad thing in the movie is that, while it will make you uncomfortable and make you shrivel at some of the disgusting and downright painful looking scenes,it isn't really scary.
