Review of Silent Hill (2006) by Jane D — 19 May 2014
I personally love this movie. Not because of the plot, nor the characters, nor even the climax, but instead the visual aspects of the movie; more specifically, the monsters.
Yes, I am aware that the characters are flat, the plot is hopelessly surreal, and the end was tanked, but the one aspect of the movie that changed my mind entirely about the movie was the monsters. Nowadays, it takes much more to scare the average person than it did back in the early 20th century. You can't watch the original Creature from the Black Lagoon or The Blob now and honestly be scared, and because of this, in years past, monster movies have become a rare sight, and when you do find one, it is generally done with crappy effects that render the monster no scarier than one movies of the olden days.
When it comes to modern-day monster movies, this one takes the cake. These monsters aren't anything like those giant isopods from The Bay, or weird, mutant, cave people from The Descent; no, these monsters are the real deal. Even better still, there is a large assortment of these monsters to enhance the visual masterpiece that this movie is. I genuinely got excited while watching this movie, as I fancy myself a bit of a Monster Movie Fanatic, and fell in love with this movie instantly.
The only thing that could make this movie better is by getting rid of the pesky plot, character depth, and dialogue, and just make this a silent movie for your viewing pleasure.
