Very hard work is how I would summarise this film. Yet another epic from director Martin Scorsese starring Liam Neeson, Andrew Garfield and Adam Driver.

Basically the film has a seventeenth century setting in Japan where Christianity is outlawed and a Catholic Priest (Ferreira) tries to spread the faith in the country.

When he goes missing two of his Portugese students Rodrigues (Garfield) and Garrpe (Driver) make the journey to try and find him and spread the Catholic faith.

Perhaps it's my atheist belief that made the subject matter very hard work at times. I was just profoundly bored despite my best efforts to keep with the film. Which I did.

Scorsese films are known for there long running times and Silence is no different. I think a good half an hour could quite easily have been edited from the running time.

The cinematography is good. The foggy environment at the beginning to the sunny Japanese environment.

I don't really know Garfield or Driver. Garfield especially puts in a shift. Neeson appears to die after 5 minutes (bringing back memories of his fleeting appearance in Gangs Of New York) however he reappears towards the end.

Serious critics have given this film a respectable rating but it just didn't hit the right notes for me. Disappointing.
