Review of Silence (2017) by Matthew D — 30 Jul 2018
Fantastic faith based epic from Martin Scorsese. Silence beautifully and subtly takes a look into the mind and heart of those who believe in a God. What does it take to still believe in God when you are tested? Silence takes place in feudal Japan during their persecution of Christians throughout Japan.
I will not spoil anything, but simply recommend this film to all that have any type of faith. You will relate to this struggle and empathize with these complex characters. Even if you do not have a faith, see Silence.
It is an excellent film of quality. The cinematography is gorgeous as Scorsese gives us vistas and natural landscapes while he lovingly recreates feudal Japan. The costumes and sets are so gritty and realistic.
Andrew Garfield's performance is inspired and deserved an Oscar. Adam Driver & Liam Neeson give excellent acting performances as do the various and many stunningly heartfelt performances from the Japanese cast.
It is well worth the long run time as this is an epic journey of faith that will be remembered as a modern day Ben Hur. Thank you, Martin Scorsese. We needed a great film.
