Review of Silence (2016) by Tony1984 — 24 Jan 2018
As a cinematic epic it ticks all the boxes . It’s a movie Scorsese has been waiting to make for a long time and the viewer is certainly made more than aware of the drudgery of time in this massively over long movie. Half should have been cut. It’s violence, squalor and pain are unrelenting. There is no respite. It’s a struggle to watch.
There can be no faulting the production values or the performances of the actors which are excellent, but the subject matter has little resonance. Japanese people will look on bemused. In the west the Jesuits are not exactly a subject fascination with the general public either. In actuality if you read history it’s easy to be anti Jesuit, whose fanaticism cost thousands and thousands of simple people their lives for nothing.
The Mission comes to mind when watching The Silence and just how good it was. Silence I’m afraid is only fair..
