Review of Silence (2016) by Gary S — 10 Feb 2017
While a tad overlong and repetitive, it's always lovely to look at. To an atheist like me, though, it's difficult to connect with it emotionally - or even logically. The central moral dilemma - apostatize or die/let other people die - which the main characters struggle with over and over again, is simply a no-brainer for me, and so it's pretty much completely unrelatable.
Finally, my understanding of Scorsese's message - which may be significantly different from a Christian's interpretation - is that ultimately the rituals and imagery of faith are pointless, and what's important is actual, internal faith, which doesn't lie in empty words or statues or crosses.
The tragedy of the priests is that their arrogance and pride blinds them to simple logic and humanity, and that's still true of many "religious" people today.
