Review of Silence (2016) by Brandon O — 27 Feb 2017
Silence's cinematography and themes are closely intertwined -- both cogently showcase beauty, mystery, and desolation. The performances are notable all around, but those of the Japanese (whom are portrayed with such humble humanity), and Andrew Garfield, lead the pack.
Just as its title reflects, it frequently uses silence and sounds of nature as its score, and to great effect. This is such a refreshingly sobering look at faith in all of its real-life richness, complexity, and sometimes, bleak despair.
Scorsese, through astounding direction and imagery, poses many questions for the audience to wrestle with for a long time after.
