Review of Signs (2002) by Simon-J — 14 Jul 2021
Underrated by critics! I just *love* the slow-burning dread in this film. That coupled with a compelling script, simple but effective cinematography and all of the performances (especially Mel Gibson's nuanced, softly-spoken ex-pastor) combined to create a unique, memorable atmosphere.
The way it pings between suspense and surprising uses of humour without creating a jarring tone is quite masterful; love that shot when Joaquin has joined the children wearing the tin-foil hats, and they look up at Mel Gibson in unison.
Finally, the film has a terrific and bold score by James Newton Howard built around a main motif of just 3 notes. And I really enjoyed the religious overtones which added an extra compelling element.
