Review of Sideways (2004) by Samantha R — 26 Jan 2010
First time I saw it in the theater I was a little surprised at it's Oscar buzz. I enjoyed it but thought hmmm... really? Best picture?
Well I find myself returning to it now and again and it still makes me laugh when they tried to make us laugh. And it makes me a little sad when they were shooting for that too. It's a little quirky and deliberate at times, some would say SLOW when I choose deliberate. :) Regardless everything seemed authentic (despite being nothing I was used to myself)... the strange relationship with his mother...having a college buddy with whom you have nothing in common remaining a close comrade...even a love of wine. I hate it myself and kind of got a kick out of the little jabs at the pomposity of most 'tasters'. How pompous to use a word like pomposity! :).
The sad lost little main character may be unappealing in every way but we still root for him. I think it's sad and funny in parts and well worth a view every now and again.
8.5.
