Review of Sideways (2004) by Aimee E — 30 Dec 2018
The critics consensus says Sideways is a "mature road trip comedy," which is exactly how I'd describe it too. For some reason, that descriptor didn't appeal to me, and I put off seeing this movie until I could no longer ignore the accolades and pop-culture references (South Park's parody starring Terrence and Philip).
The writing is sharp, the acting is excellent. There's a lot to be enjoyed by reading between the lines, so I believe you would be rewarded by multiple viewings. What ultimately qualifies it as a great movie is the fact all four main characters have realistic and easy-to-understand motivations, and the story flows naturally from there.
The characters are three-dimensional enough to love them even for their flaws.
