Review of Side Effects (2013) by Jwee Chiek E — 06 Jun 2014
Highly intelligent film and very enthralling for people who are interested in psychiatry and psychiatric drugs. Jargons like SSRIs and ECT treatments were used in the film and lent authenticity to the factual aspects.
However the most important message in the film was 'Money is the root of evil'. Once again it was portrayed in this psychiatric thriller without losing any relevance because the evil is ageless.
It will be relevant even 1000 years from now if mankind still exists. Is a crime a crime only when a psychiatrist calls it a crime? Only in modern times can we blame acts of wickedness on psychiatric aberrations or side effects to psychiatric drugs.
Whichever it may be, the perpetrator is absolved of her wickedness and cannot be held accountable. Such ambiguities were never so in olden times as evidenced in the Book of Deuteronomy. Did Cain plead insanity for his murder of Abel like Emily did of sweet Martin (Channing Tatum)?
