Review of Sid and Nancy (1986) by Thomas W — 16 Jan 2010
OK, so my top 3 movies are from the 80's and 2 of the 3 are Indie flicks, sue me. This movie encompasses so many great things about life back then: freedom/rebellion against authority (I was starting college 5 hours away from the folks), great energetic & loud music (punk rock inspired me as a teenager much like the Beatles did as a child) and lyrics/dialog which went further than life, work, church and school offered me at that time.
I think while the story was once again, true and the budget, was once again, very small, the attitudes, dialog and acting make this film rank up there with some of the all time greats. IMO Gary Oldman and Chloe Ebb channeled/nailed their parts to perfection.
The comedic nature of their antics to just exist/survive keeps me entertained and laughing hysterically every time that I watch it even after seeing this film over 30+ times since its initial release.
While the Sex Pistols aren't/weren't one of my favorite punk bands from the 70's (the Clash, Pogues, Ramones take those honors), this movie epitomizes and is really the only film that matters if you are looking for a true snapshot of the times.
