Review of Sicario: Day of the Soldado (2018) by Tj S — 09 Jul 2018
An acceptable follow up to Sicario that I did not expect to see. Sicario was an interesting and intese movie that surprised me when I watched it and I didn't imagine a sequel being released ever. So I decided to give this one a shot and let me tell you it was much darker than the first.
This film, much like the other movies written by Taylor Sheridan had a message and I feel his message was portrayed well - that being the effects wars (whether it be terrorism or drug wars) have on children who live in the midst of it.
So my three stars are really awarded to both Taylor Sheridan and our leading actors Josh Brolin and Benicio Del Toro. I hate to sound like a broken record but it's these three individuals that allowed this movie to what it is.
Outside of them I feel that this movie didn't need to be made and would have been just another drug war action flick. The downside to this movie was it was missing the Villeanue / Roger Deacons team that the first movie had.
The two of them together made a beautiful movie much like they did with Bladerunner 2049 this year. Overall this was a nice companion piece to the first for Del Toro's character but it's not required viewing in my opinion.
Still probably my least favorite of Taylor Sheridan thus far.
