Review of Sicario (2015) by Ronnel A — 20 Mar 2016
Dennis Villanueva's drug cartel drama Sicario has the same feel as his previous film Prisoners, the film does a great job building tension and maintaining that level of uneasiness throughout. By the end of the film I can't help myself from feeling the same way I did after watching Prisoners, slightly let down and underwhelmed.
The sum of the movies parts don't equal something that memorable or even creative. It feels like the story builds all this anticipation and by the time it's over you feel like nothing happened.
Take the Cohen Brothers classic "No Country For Old Men" (also starring Josh Brolin) the film is based on similar subject matter, it moves at a slow pace at times but by the end of the film you are left with so many deep and memorable scenes to draw from.
I would be let down by every movie I see if I held it to the standard of "NCFOM", but I do expect the film to at least give me a little to work with. Unfortunately that is not the case with Sicario, it's worth one viewing but I would not add it to my collection.
