Review of Sicario (2015) by Dragonsfoe . — 02 May 2016
Translation: Hitman.
Sicario is a film that benefits from a up and coming director and a very talented cast. Though the film has to build up before it really gets going it ends up being a satisfying if not exhilarating thriller.
The film has a lot going for it. It's direction, cast, story, cinematography, and music are all top notch. Blunt and Brolin are both very well cast in their roles, but it is Del Toro who really steals the show, he is mesmerizing in his turn as a very complicated unsettling character. Villanueve is great at making suspenseful and exciting tension and the beautiful shots by Deakins and the brooding musical score by Johansson are all major components in what makes this a very good film.
On the other hand, the film is most definitely build up. It starts out slow in the beginning and gets better and better as it goes. It's second two acts are far more exciting compared to its first.
Overall Sicario is a very entertaining film, but the first act is less superior than the next ones. There is so live in this film especially Del Toro. Villanueve isn't on a roll and he has no signs of stopping.
Rating: 7.8.
