Review of Sicario (2015) by Yana I — 15 Jan 2016
Sicario is an intense, thrilling watch, the story slowly builds up the whole time until its final mind blowing release and you never know what to expect next. It's shocking, it doesn't have many plot twists but there are a few moments after which I stared at the screen with my mouth open totally not expecting what has happened.
The directing and the cinematography are huge contributors to the movie's atmosphere, the cinematography is probably my favorite part about it. The colors, wide shots, I can't describe how pleasing was it to watch it.
My main complaint about the movie is Blunt's character. It was a constant moral battle for me to watch her. Sometimes I loved her, sometimes her strong moral compass pissed me off and I wished she understood what's happening, and then I loved her again for being so opinionated. That's the beauty of it, seeing such complex characters on screen, never knowing whether to love them or be annoyed. The acting both on Blunt's and of course on del Toro's parts is amazing.
The most important part though: this movie is scary. Seeing how much innocent people are affected by drug cartels running their towns and at the same time how used they are to it. Gun shots, missing people, dead family members are not treated as a tragedy anymore, it's a part of their daily life. And to think people still live like this in the world. It's terrifying.
