Review of Shutter Island (2010) by Aditya M — 18 Sep 2013
The movie centers around Daniels (DiCaprio) trying to play a hero, as he kicks away a pistol from the Dachau S S commandant, who has shot himself fatally, and dies one hour later, of his wounds. This apparently haunts him, when he finds himself in Shutter Island.
He realizes that some in Shutter Island are German doctors of psychiatry, and psychology, who were German doctors during World War two. These doctors presumably used to diagnose mental illness, and send victims to concentration camps.
I presume, that the acts of barbarism in Dachau, elicited great revulsion among the 'liberators', and they weren't looked at with sympathy, among those who like Daniels, thought they needed to be extra perceptive and macho, as they couldn't end the life of people who shot them, or were barbaric themselves towards such people, killing guards in armed packs.
If people with an outlook could say that the inmates of concentration camps, were worthy of warmth, sympathy and understanding, and that even the enemy could be given a quick death, when required, the adherents of Judaism, would not have been affected as they were, because they were seen as a religious and ethnic group.
I identify with Judaism in a strong manner on this count. The reason why the Soviets were brutal in Germany, is because the general population suffered terribly, and because of the sufferings of the people in concentration camps, the sufferers were not empathized with, but suffering was seen to be unnecessary, and grave.
In Stalingrad, soldiers had to face untold difficulty, but they saw the prisoners as greater sufferers.
