Review of Shutter (2004) by Rob C — 25 Sep 2009
Shutter tells the tale about love, tragedy and a fatal attraction that you can't seem to escape. I do love how Asians can capture the element of horror in a film. The detail in Shutter was really quite amazing.
For example, the use of the male and female praying mantis' mating habits on the TV in the background. The female mantis eats the male when they're mating. The male eventually accepts his death and dies.
That certain scene tells the story perfectly. In another scene, we see a female mantis in some shrub where the photographer and his girlfriend go to visit the dead girls mother. Little parts like that grab my attention.
The music score also lends a helping hand in the scare tactics for Shutter. Granted, they do go a little overboard with it, but the whole point of the movie is to make you jump, and it accomplishes that perfectly.
There's also a part at the start of the ending credits where it says the photos that were used in the film that showed families with apparitions in them, were actually real. The all around creepy atmosphere from the dialogue to the score make for a great horror film.
