Review of Shrooms (2007) by T G — 23 Oct 2008
Okay, where the hell do I start on this one? Well, the first scene is interesting, followed by at least 20 minutes of some of the worst cinema I have ever scene! I mean, these kids are sooooo stereotypical (which is common in a woodlands slasher film) that I almost wanted to turn the damn thing off and just take my chances with the trusty idiot box.
You've got your meathead (horrible actor), stoner (Jason Mewes wannabe - hair and hat to boot), slut (bangin' every guy in camp), innocent heroine (decent actress), mysterious guy (was that really an Irish accent?), and hippie girl (horrible).
Collectively, they make up a really well done pile of mule dung. Sounds completely like a waste of time, huh? Wrong!! You see, when the shrooms kick in, this becomes a pretty creepy psychedellic film.
The folk tale of the Druid Monks is pretty damn terrifiying - not to mention the local Irish woodsmen. I won't give too much away, but the effect of the drugs and how they confuse the fiction from the fantasy is really captured well in the last two thirds of the movie.
The Black Monk is frickin' macbre as all get out!! If you like horror and altered consciousness as much as I do, you might want to give this a gander - just don't lend too much hope to the lackluster cast.
