Review of Shrooms (2007) by Nani V — 26 Aug 2009
I think people were needlessly hard on this movie. I went in expecting pure crap but what I actually got was a beautifully shot, visually unique horror film. Sure, it was pretty standard slasher fare, but it was better than most slashers out there.
Not only was it humorous at times (the talking cow scene in particular) but it had generally creepy, WTF moments, and everything seemed to be the right balance. I particularly liked the visual depiction of the monk: it was kind of cliched but not too overly done.
On the downside, as is typical for horror films, the acting was considerably lackluster at times, but for the most part stayed pretty average. No knockout performances here, I'm sorry to say. Also, I would have preferred a different style for the "trip" sequences as I feel they were trying to put you in the surreal mindset in a realistic way (i.
E. the way it'd probably really be) but it just didn't work for me. It felt too discombobulated. I hope the makers don't try a sequel as by itself it was pretty decent. Hell, it could have been a lot worse, especially since I was expecting it to be.
