The focus of the Shrek series should be on comedy, and when it completely loses the comedy after the birthday party scene is when it fails. The story has already been done better in the classic It's a Wonderful Life, so why try to take on Frank Capra when you can stick to the comedy? The screenwriting was unfortunately very sloppy and cliche in several areas, but it had its moments.
