Review of Showtime (2002) by Robert F — 04 Feb 2007
Never before have I thought I could say this, but Showtime is De Niro's worst film. Can't really blame him though, considering the money he's pulling down. There is no plausable premise, originality, or even great acting to carry this film.
It is obvious that the cash is the big factor driving these two actors to sign on. De Niro looks embarassed with himself, and Murphy's career has been over anyways so he didn't have anything to lose.
By the way, Dreamgirls is not going to resurrect Eddie anytime soon, despite his Oscar nomination. Anyway, back to the point. Showtime is a combination of several films we've already seen before. Somehow the modern Hollywood doesn't care what's made as long as it involves someone we know, such as De Niro or Murphy.
However, the two main actors aren't always this bad. There wasn't much that they could work with and as a result, the outcome of this film is nothing short of predictable. Shall anyone want to see De Niro's finer comedic works, take a look at Analyze This, or Meet the Parents.
There is talent here, but was entirely wasted.
