Review of Showgirls (1995) by Josh G — 16 May 2008
Reaches new heights of awesomeness.
Yes, yes, and yes again -- it's an absolutely horrible movie. Those who have warned you against it are right in saying that it's terrible. Nomi Malone (Berkley) is brain-dead, and like a Tyrannosaurus who doesn't understand that you shouldn't touch an electric fence twice, she continually tries to become friends with her arch-nemesis, at one point bonding(?) with her over the fact that both women like to eat dog food. No joke.
There is, of course, copious amounts of nudity in this film, which leads many to compare it to a soft core porn more than an actual movie. This is probably a fair assessment, but the full frontal nudity in Showgirls almost seems like more than you would see in most soft-core flicks.
As far as the plot goes, it's basically an NC-17 version of The Girl in Gold Boots: Nomi is a girl who thinks she can dance, even though when she dances (and when she has sex) it looks like she's having a seizure. Seriously, watch her writhe around and foam at the mouth on the dancefloor, and then later in the pool. Nonetheless, she somehow finds herself competing for a spot in some prestigious topless dance-club thing, and then she gets that, but that's not the point of the movie... I guess?
It doesn't make sense. It doesn't really go anywhere. The relationships between the characters are unbelievably fake, the dialogue is hilarious, and the acting is atrocious.
In short, it delivered everything that I thought it would. Wonderful, wonderful garbage.
