Review of Showgirls (1995) by Lena V — 28 Feb 2010
Think TV movie with bigger stars & a bigger budget - but with the same script, plus gratuitous profanity thrown in. This one delivered an appalling hodgepodge of cringing & cracking up on my part.
Finally watched this on cable last night - I hate censorship, so always flipped past it through the years when it was featured on VH1. I didn't think a movie so overtly sexual could be this completely unsexy - but Showgirls mastered this delicate balance like high art.
This film was *meant* to be campy, right? The fact that you can't tell is what makes it so funny! Keep an eye out for Nomi's facial expressions, random explosive temper flare-ups, & fast food burgers - not to mention the girls' horrid nails & Kyle MacLachlan's hairstyle.
