Review of Showgirls (1995) by Richard L — 17 Jan 2012
First of all, don't get it wrong -- I am interested in Paul Verhoeven's complete filmography, which includes cult classics such as Robocop (1987), Starship Troopers (1997), and Total Recall (1990).
I should have read reviews about this movie before viewing it, because I did not enjoy it at all and should have skipped it. However, I have a strict principle of watching a movie from the beginning to the end, regardless of quality (which explains how I sat through Motocross Zombies from Hell (Robert 2007)), because sometimes it's worth it.
This movie is too long (131 minutes), the storyline makes little to no sense (no, it's not realistic; the only remotely realistic parts are lost, diluted in everything else; had they been magnified, maybe the movie would have been interesting) and every character is either a dumb stereotype (most male characters) or a completely erratic near-psychpath (most female characters, especially Nomi Malone).
Everything in this movie is astoundingly fake to the point of revulsion, including acting and nudity, which gets aversive about just right after it begins.
