Showgirls' narratives enters spontaneous twists and turns without reason or comprehension--whether it's James initially introduced as a good guy stereotype before impregnating another woman with no reconciliation afterwards or Molly antagonizing Nomi for pushing Cristal down before forgiving her with no onscreen resolution between the two.

The character development is nonexistent and in contrast to Ed Wood's '50s cult classic Plan 9 from Outer Space, in which his desperation to become a groundbreaking filmmaker set its signature so-bad-it's-good campiness, the filmmaking behind Showgirls just feels hollow and perverse, not one hint that the filmmakers had something important--if anything at all--to say.

If it weren't so famously regarded as one of the worst films ever made, it wouldn't receive the cult status it has today.

This review of Showgirls (1995) was written by on 17 Oct 2014.
