Review of Showgirls (1995) by Roland D — 10 Jul 2010
If there's one positive thing that can be said for this movie, it's that the official drinking game is really fun, as is the "Pin the Pasties on the Showgirl" game that came with it. But just because the producers have chosen to capitalize on how bad this movie is, that doesn't mean I can forget the fact that, at one time, it was intended to be good.
Not Oscar-contender good, I'm sure, but it was at least supposed to be clever, thrilling, and sexy. It is none of these things. The dialogue is a joke, as is most of the acting, but even those flaws would be easier to overlook if these actresses were half as attractive as they think they are.
As for the plot, half of it is just plain illogical, and the other half is like an exercise in trying to make the story as ridiculous and over-the-top as possible. Which can be fun, if it's done intentionally and in the right spirit.
But I get the impression that everyone involved in this movie was actually taking it seriously, and that's why we laugh at them, not with them.
