Review of Showgirls (1995) by Kim R — 21 Aug 2010
A genuine oddity.
One of those films that lacks anything resembling a coherent story and contains dialogue that is abouut as inept as I have ever heard. Having said that, this is a hysterical film to watch as a result. The characters are paper thin and are barely more than character types (best friend, scumbag boss etc). This is purely down to the work of Ezsterhas and Verhoeven, they clearly had a vision for what they wanted this film to be, but it's a mystery to me what that might be...
Castwise, we actually have some talented people on board but that talent doesn't come through. Up front Elizabeth Berkley is exhausting to watch. Everything that she does from walking, talking eating, dancing is done with a dramatic edge. I doubt that was her choice and the best that I can say is that she was committed to the role as that dramatic flourish is there in everything she does. Kyle MacLachlan also sports potentially the worst flick hairstyle I have ever seen which had me giggling everytime he popped up on screen.
An extremnely poor film that is totally watchable because of its many flaws..
