Review of Shoulder Arms (1918) by Ramona P — 09 Jan 2009
A satirical film about World War I, which was still going on during its production. That?s some pretty bold subject matter, but the film was reportedly well liked by veterans. The early portions poking fun at the general misery in the trenches is very strong.
There?s a particularly iconic shot with Chaplin shooting a rifle and tallying his kills on a chalkboard. There?s a darkness to all this humor. The film does falter a bit in its second half, and the ending where he captures Kaiser Whilhelm is pretty loopy.
Still, this is quite a piece of work.
