Review of Shottas (2002) by Thebrownhornet J — 27 Feb 2007
This has been called 'The Jamaican Scarface'. What utter blasphemy. However, this film was actually good. I was expecting your typical gangsta fare: shoot-'em-up, bling-bling, money-cash, ho's.... Though the storyline was typical, something made it all come together. Let's examine this:
1) The cast was real Jamaicans with REAL Jamaican accents. It annoys me to no end to see Americans (or otherwise) playing Jamaicans. If you want to see what I mean, just rent 'The Mighty Quinn' or 'Cool Runnings'.
2) The soundtrack, all roots reggae and dancehall, was blazing.
3)Sexy men all through the movie (goodness....).
Number 3 was kind of superficial, wasn't it? Oh well.... The only downside to the movie was Wyclef. I used to dig him back in the 'Guantanamera' days, but now he only comes off as an arrogant prick. (By the way, WHY-clef is the Americanized pronunciation of his name. It is truly pronounced WEE-clef.).
Anyway, gratuitous bloodshed, degradation of women and cursing abound. But again, this movie just works.
