Review of Shot Caller (2017) by John S — 19 Feb 2018
Shot caller starts as an entertaining exploratory journey into how a good man can be turned bad by a corrupt and brutal justice system. A system that cares little for inmates' welfare, and even less for rehabilitation, forces our protagonist to make hard choices and some unsavory friends just to survive.
This is a strong, well executed premise that keeps the movie engaging and interesting all the way up to a final act which makes you question the protagonist's decision making. His course of action at the end technically makes sense but it seems like it should have been a last ditch effort as opposed to his first choice. It doesn't detract too much from the movie but does make the ending less satisfying.
