Review of Shortbus (2006) by Sarah . — 12 Oct 2008
The kind of story that really feels like it could only happen in New York. What's remarkable is that despite the explicit sex on view, all the characters retain a certain innocence and even modesty.
This is a world that for all its carnal hedonism is as codified and etiquette observing as a New England tea party. Where directors like Gaspar Noé and Catherine Breillat, use (unsimulated) sex to shock, John Cameron Mitchell's approach is much more celebratory, accepting and inclusive.
The performances are excellent, the (largely improvised) dialogue witty at times, touching at others, the animated inserts beautiful and the honesty palpable. Unlike any other film I've seen. And after watching it, you'll never be able to hear The Star Spangled Banner the same way again.
