Review of Shortbus (2006) by Chris V — 05 Aug 2008
This was very good. Though I don't think the "real sex" added anything in particular, the film itself understands things about human nature that are all too apparent to each and every one of us but never seem to get portrayed onscreen.
Sex is never a legitimate, consuming problem in movies. Characters always either have sex as a plot device or as shallow, steamy entertainment for voyeuristic audiences. No wonder this thing never broke through -- it won't have any of that.
It's much too honest. Unlike many who will dismiss this at face value (omg it's a penis get over it), I don't see any of the things in this movie as graphic or unusual at all. I see them as part and parcel of this whole human experience, and I have a feeling I'd strongly commend any film for being so open.
Highly recommended.
