Review of Shortbus (2006) by Rhiannon P — 02 Nov 2010
Shortbus is an excellent exploration of sexual liberalism. Instead of looking at sexuality at something taboo or bizarre, it takes sexuality (and all possible alternate forms of it) as a part and parcel of life and examines the lives of characters who are on a quest to discover and confront their sexual nature.
The movie is also a very interesting experiment considering that the director worked with the actors in actually developing the stories depending on the actors and their experiences. The movie looks a motley bunch of characters who are frustrated emotionally and sexually and it shows the links between the two.
The movie is not for the conservative or those with a faint heart. It is easily the most sexually explicit movie short of being a porn film. However, if you have an open mind, then it is easy to look beyond the sex and actually look at the people and their stories.
Armed with a great soundtrack, excellent direction and a script laced with wit and humour, Shortbus provides some great entertainment. The performances are very natural. However, the best performance is that of Sook-Yin Lee who plays the role of a sex therapist who has never had an orgasm herself.
She has the most screen time and also uses it well. Overall, Shortbus is a very good movie. If you can appreciate it, you can watch it over and over. It is a love song to liberalism and every sentiment and thought that goes with it.
Super-solid Recommendation!
