Destin Cretton's feature-length debut feature packs a whollop from the very first frame to the very last. Taking on a hot-button and rarely explored film subject in the form of the youth foster care system, Cretton makes many resounding statements that are as thoroughly fleshed out and multi-dimensional as Brie Larson's meditative central performance.

The writer-director aptly stays far away from rookie mistakes and the film, despite its topical weight never feels heavy-handed or didactic. The dialogue feels and is presented naturally and efficiently but also quite bitingly.

One standout part (out of many) includes a very raw scene between John Gallagher Jr.'s empathetic Mason and one of the more troubled youths named Marcus who opens up to his counselor in the form of a rap that left me (as well as Mason himself) speechless.

Another comparative scene happens between Grace and tomboy Jaden who shares a short story as a metaphor for paternal sexual abuse and neglect. The stakes in the film, for all of the characters, are never greater as each beat strikes the perfect semblance of heartwarming sentiment and grave brutality.

There are many more light-hearted moments throughout as well, especially in the first act, that keep the film from feeling like an albatross. If ever you thought of entering this line of work for at-risk teens and the sacrifices it entails, this film will serve as documentary.

This film, much like 'Fruitvale Station' and last year's breakout Aaron Paul star-vehicle 'Smashed' gives me hope for the fate of independent cinema. A must see.
