Review of Short Term 12 (2013) by Devin D — 22 Jan 2014
"Short Term 12" is one of those small-time indies that hit you big time ("Safety Not Guaranteed" and "Garden State" are amongst the most coveted). It tells the story of Grace (Brie Larson), a staff member of a foster care facility called Short Term 12, who encounters old demons when two people arrive in her life: Jayden (Kaitlyn Dever), a new intake with an abusive past and Gace's very own unborn baby.
There are some very dark places this movie goes to that are given such light, it's damn near impossible to deny the screenplay's emotional purity. To put it plainly, I have never seen a movie that has portrayed "the troubled teen scenario" with such delicate, un-filtered honesty as "Short Term 12.
" Funny, heartbreaking, and soulful- this is one of the finest displays of natural acting and direction, whose combination of which creates one of the most emotionally satisfying and true cinematic experiences of 2013.
