Review of Short Cuts (1993) by Padraig W — 02 Nov 2007
Altman was a master of interlocking stories and Short Cuts is a supreme example of that. Altman took a series of Raymond Carver short stories, created an interlocking narrative and transposed them to LA.
This is a case of the whole being better than the sum of its parts. Each story resonates with the others in a way that seems to be a story about the craziness of LA. The ensemble playing is terrific. But the real star is Altman.
He manages to maintain interest in each character so you are longing for them to re-enter the picture again. It never flags, never pushes and never fails. A treat.
