Review of Short Cuts (1993) by Tyler D — 27 Jan 2008
One of the greats in the pantheon of great mosaic pieces. They're most often powerful; after all, most of them run long, and you get so attached to the charactors that when something happens to any of them, your heart sinks.
But Altman has really accomplished something here; making a constantly engaging, mature, never cheesy, overwhelmingly powerful adaptation of some great short stories. In a city where Alex Trebek is God, and everybody's just waiting for that 8.
6 earthquake that ends everything, we're introduced to a bunch of people that are (surprise!), all connected. We see their flaws and all, but Altman poses the challenging question..."do they really do anything wrong?".
Short Cuts's LA is a world to get lost in, even if it's already your hometown. A triumph.
