The answer to Dennis Pennis's question to Steve Martin- "Steve, why aren't you funny any more?' Well, it's because he's making acerbic satires like Bowfinger and incredibly affecting love stories like this.
Clare Danes is plain, Steve Martin is sleazy, and Jason Schwartzman is a stoner, but all become likeable characters, drawn out by Martin's affecting voiceover narration. For a simple story the journey of the film is suprisingly unpredictable.
An absolute gem of a film.
