Review of Shopgirl (2005) by Lesline D — 13 Jan 2008
This is a nice film that grows on you. Mirabelle is basically "bought" with the wonderful clothes, gloves, and things that Ray Porter gives her. She thinks he is an answer to all of her dreams, but there is no love there.
No emotional relationship. Ray is your typical business person who is always calculating the angle, always unemotional and always in control. He can't let go emotionally, to be able to love. Jeremy doesn't have the money, the class or the education of Ray, but he is artistic and caring about Mireille.
In the end, it all works out. Much like water finding it's own level. A nice story. If people could only know themselves, their needs and what they want better, these types of situations would happen less often.
But as they say: "C'est la vie.".
