Review of Shopgirl (2005) by Kimberly E — 01 Sep 2008
A mousy, small-town girl with a boring job selling gloves at Saks (Claire Danes) chooses between a rich but uncaring symbolic logician (Steve Martin) and an adorably quirky but still finding his way amplifier stenciler (Jason Schwartzman).
Based on Martin's novella, this film is a charming and subtle romantic work that stole my heart. The film starts with a voiceover by Martin who claims that all Mirabelle Buttersfield needs is an omniscient narrator to bring the right person into her life.
Mirabelle then meets two possibilities for the job with whom she negotiates the ups and downs of romance. Worth watching for the emotionally subtle acting and the charming resolution.
