Review of Shopgirl (2005) by Andrea W — 28 Dec 2008
I was a little leary of this one at first, knowing it was highlighting a May-December romance, and because I do not see Steve Martin as a romantic leading man. To me, he'll always be George Banks, the picture-perfect all-American dad.
The story and the film completely took me by surprise and was a very tender and understated. Steve Martin did a wonderful job on the screenplay, outlining the nuances in the characters' personalities so well. Not once did his script pander to the lowest common denominator by feeding us vapid Hollywood schtick; he was simply telling the story of three lives and loves in a very honest yet respectful way. Brilliantly acted by all. This is definitely a favorite of the year.
