Review of Shopgirl (2005) by Jonathan T — 04 Jan 2009

I didn't expect to like this movie, but by the end I found myself not wanting it to be finished. Claire Danes really makes the movie; I can't imagine anyone else in the part. Steve Martin goes too easy on his character, who seems old enough and intelligent enough to have known better! The ending is satisfying but feels a bit tacked-on and comes too quickly.

Nice musical score; like the editing and department store displays, it's a bit overpolished but still the movie is much better than the standard Hollywood romantic comedy (which this is *not*).
