Review of Shopgirl (2005) by Karlyn J — 29 Mar 2009
The things I do for Jason Schwartzman. Sporadically touching, beautiful, and funny, Shopgirl redeemed itself in the last 20 minutes, but I'm not convinced that the significance and poignancy that I drew from it were implicit in the film itself. I'm barely on speaking terms with Claire Danes; we fought during the 90's but made up with The Family Stone. While this film didn't convince me to hate her again, it did remind me why I wasn't okay with her for so long. The biggest blemish on the film was the fact that the novella and screenplay were written by the same actor who gets to gets to bone a young Claire Danes in it. Don't be that guy, Steve Martin. You're better than that.
Rating: B-/C+.
