Review of Shopgirl (2005) by Michelle V — 13 May 2009
I wasn't expecting to like this movie as much as I did, and mostly went into it only because I like Jason Schwartzman's voice and Claire Danes face [nobody cries like Claire Danes; that quivery chin gets me every time].
The first twenty minutes of awkward interaction between Schwartzman and Danes felt sadly familiar to me, but in a funny and true way. I worried, though, over the introduction of Steve Martin's character, Ray Porter, a man over 50, when the movie score suddenly became moody with overwrought violin.
But in the end, I was got. I am a sucker for these quiet movies with their fragile story-telling full of subtle (or not) emotional moments.
